It was fast to load, blazingly fast, and getting the area of the sky I was interested in centered was the work of a few seconds. For years and years.ĭespite its age and the undeniable clunkiness of its graphics, Skyglobe was all I needed for quick looks at the sky. What has Unk been using, then? The ancient DOS app, Skyglobe 3.6. STELLARIUM CELESTRON NEXSTAR PROThat leaves out the heavy-hitters, including big names like Starry Night Pro Plus and TheSky 6. I want a program that is quick like a bunny. I do not want to cool my heels while the program loads. Fer instance, I want to know if Saturn is high up enough RIGHT NOW for me to tote our StarBlast mini-Dob onto the front porch for a 5-minute peep at the ringed wonder. I like to have a planetarium program for spur-of-the-moment sky checks. And, while the updated display of CdC version 3.0 looks good, it can’t compete with the likes of Starry Night and RedShift. It’s a little slow to load for use for quick “what’s up” looks at the virtual sky. That’s the good, but like every other piece of software, Cartes ain’t good at everything. It can interface with other programs like Deepsky and RTGUI, can go incredibly deep, and is all many deep sky obsessed amateur astronomers need or ever will need. Some folks like it even better than Cartes, though it is aimed at a somewhat different audience.Ĭartes du Ciel is great. With Cartes du Ciel, it’s become the most popular freeware astronomy application. I had previously aligned the telescope using the handheld remote on the Celestron CPC and the 3 star alignment system. If’n you have even a nodding acquaintance with the world of astronomy software, I don’t have to tell you what a “ Stellarium” is. Part 3: Aligning Stellarium and the Telescope I pressed Ctrl+1 to confirm that Stellarium was sending a slew signal to the telescope. Mine was COM7ħ) In Stellarium, open the Telescope Configuration pageĨ) Under "Device Settings" I typed in "COM7" (even though the list only offered COM1 - COM4.ĩ) I left all other default settings as isġ0) I clicked on "Start" on the Slew Telescope page in Stellarium and the telescope was recognized. STELLARIUM CELESTRON NEXSTAR SERIALHere are detailed instructions on figuring out what serial port to use:Ġ) With the serial cable connected to the telescope:Ħ) Find the COM port assigned to your serial cable adaptor (typically the manufactures name of the cable or the driver you installed). It appears that it had to do with the serial port. STELLARIUM CELESTRON NEXSTAR SOFTWAREIn Stellarium, I had difficulty getting the software to connect to the telescope. I connected the cable between the USB jack on the computer and the seriel connector in the bottom of the handheld remote. I purchased a USB to Serial adaptor and installed the driver for it. I installed Stellarium and need to use the Stellarium (No Open GL2) version for the graphics to work. I am using an Windows laptop running Windows XP 2007. Part 2: Connecting the scope to Stellarium In general this process works well and is very straighforward for a beginner. I use the handheld remote and use the 3 star sky align method to align the scope. Setting up the Celestron CPC scope was very easy. I will provide updates to this thread as I work through the process as I know there are may questions out there on this topic. I also recently have started using Stellarium and finally got the two connected yesterday. I am new to astronomy and have a brand new Celestron CPC 8 with GPS and Goto functions.
